OBF - Create a badge application with quiz

Find out how to create a quiz that can automatically issue a badge on successful completion.

Creating a Badge Application with a quiz enables you to provide earners with a URL to complete a multiple choice quiz and be automatically issued with a badge when they successfully pass it.

This is a fantastic tool if you require earners to show that they have learnt and understood the content of your activity e.g., following course completion or training.

Issuing a badge this way:

  • Removes the need for you and your colleagues to manually process names and email addresses.
  • Removes the need for you to gain written or verbal consent prior to issuing – by completing the quiz and submitting their answers, your earners are volunteering to be issued with the badge.
  • Makes a great badge acceptance rate far more likely, as earners are expecting to be issued with the badge and automated emails are generated at a time convenient for them.

PLEASE NOTE:

This feature is not available on OBF Basic accounts.

If you would like to discuss your OBF subscription type don't hesitate to submit a Customer Support Request and a member of the team will be delighted to chat.

To create a Badge Application with a Quiz on OBF:

1. Log in to Open Badge Factory.
This will open your dashboard.

2. Click 'Creator tools' from the navigation menu at the top of your screen.

3. Click ‘Badge applications’ from the list of options on the left-hand side of your screen.

This will open a list of any existing badge applications that have been created with your account.

4. Click ‘+ Create new badge application’.

5. Click ‘+ Choose badge’ to select what badge you would like to issue through this application.

6. For approval method, select ‘Automatically without review’

7. Click ‘Save’.

This will open Step 1 – Badge

The first page features ‘Instructions for issuers’.

You do not need to enter any information here as your badge will be issued automatically when an individual passes the quiz.

8. Click ‘Next’ to move onto Step 2 - Form

9. Enter your instructions for earners into the text box.

This could include information about the questions, the score they need to achieve to pass the quiz and be issued with the badge, and what happens after they finish the quiz.

Now you can begin building the form for your quiz.

Please note: The form will automatically collect earner names and email addresses, so you do not need to add elements to capture this information.

If you intend to use the same quiz format regularly, you may like to create a form template so you can easily select it at this stage rather than starting from scratch each time.

If you have existing templates, you can choose which one to use by clicking the ‘Pick a form template’ button.

To find out more about creating form templates, please see this guide.

10. Start building your form by clicking the ‘+Add element’ drop down
and selecting your first element.

Note: you have two options for elements that will enable a score to be produced for an answer. These are:

Checkboxes
- the applicant can choose one or more options out of a selection of answers.

Radio buttons
- the applicant can choose only one option out of a selection of answers.

To create a question with checkboxes, click ‘+Add element’ and select “Checkboxes”

This will open a pop-up box to build your question and enter the following information:

  • ‘Label’: Enter the question or statement you need respondents to answer.
  • ‘Options’: Enter a minimum of two answers for respondents to choose from.
  • ‘Correct answers’: Enter a minimum of one the correct answer. Tip: copy and paste the answer(s) from the ‘Options’ box to ensure they match.

Your pop-up box should now look something like this:

The score point for this question is only counted when all correct answers are checked.
E.g., if you have listed two correct answers out of four as pictured above, the respondent must select both correct answers to score the point.

Optionally, you can add help text if you would like to provide a hint.

When you are happy with your text, click ‘Ok’ in the bottom right of the box.

To create a question with radio buttons,
click ‘+Add element’ and select ‘Radio buttons’

This will open a pop-up box to build your question and enter the following information:

  • ‘Label’: Enter the question or statement you need respondents to answer.
  • ‘Options’: Enter a minimum of two answers for respondents to choose from.
  • ‘Correct answers’: Enter the correct answer.
Tip: copy and paste the answer from the ‘Options’ box to ensure they match.

Your pop-up box should now look something like this:

Optionally, you can add help text if you would like to provide a hint.

When you are happy with your text, click ‘Ok’ in the bottom right of the box.

11. Repeat above steps for all of your questions.

12. You can re-order or delete elements using the arrows and crosses.

13. When you are happy with your selection of questions / elements, click ‘Continue’.

This will open Step 3 – Message.

14. Set your application approval message.

This is the email respondents will receive when they successfully pass the quiz and are issued with the badge.

You can customise each of these fields to tailor to the respondent’s experience and preview what they will receive by clicking “Email preview”.

Alternatively, click ‘Pick an email template’ to use an existing email template.

15. When you are happy with your message, click ‘Continue’

This will open Step 4 – Approval Method

16. As your badge is being issued automatically without review, there is no information to amend on this page and you can click ‘Continue’

This will open Step 5 – Permissions

17. Manage who can review and edit this badge application.
If your OBF account's subscription is Basic or Premium, this will be set by default and you can skip to step 18 below.

Accounts with a Pro subscription can amend the following:

Review permissions:
As your approval method is ‘Automatically without review’, this setting is not important and you can leave the box ticked.

Edit permissions:

This refers to who on your organisation’s Open Badge Factory account can edit this badge application. By default, you will always be able to edit it as the original creator.

To allow other creators and admin users in your Open Badge Factory account to edit this badge application, leave the “Allowed to all creators” box ticked (recommended).

18.When you are happy with your selections, click ‘Continue’

This will open the final step, Settings.

Here you can enter some final settings for your badge application.

19. Name (required):

Enter a title for this quiz.

By default, this box will show the name of the badge, but we recommend choosing something different to distinguish this badge application from others that may use the same badge.

20: Language:

This is automatically set to the language of your OBF account.

Please note that changing the language at this stage will only change default elements of your badge application and will not translate the text you have entered throughout the form such as questions and answers.

21. Status:

By default, this is set to ‘Draft’ while you are creating the application and cannot be shared. The application URL below will appear with a strikethrough.

To enable sharing on this application right away, select ‘Active’.

This will open up some additional settings such as advertising in passport, a date range, and will enable the application URL to become live.

Underneath this are some sharing options for your application. You can copy / save these options now or revisit these to use at any time.

22. Allowed email domains (optional):

This can be useful if you would like to ensure that individuals can only complete the quiz if they are from a particular organisational domain (e.g. university, college, or local authority)

23. Redirect URL (Optional):

This can be useful if you would like to direct respondents to another website, e.g. My Skills Pass for sharing their badge.

Use Application form as evidence:

This will by default be set to ‘No’

  • Yes = The badge application and information in it is attached as evidence to the issued badge.
  • No = The badge application and its information is not attached to the issued badge.
  • Optional (earner preference) = The applicant can decide if the form is attached to the issued badge or not.

Note: the badge earner can still choose if they want to show the badge application as evidence in the badge or not, even if the application creator has determined Yes in the above-mentioned options.

24: Minimum quiz score (required):

Set the minimum score points that earners must achieve in order to be automatically issued with the badge.

There is one point for each question answered correctly, so the number you enter here will depend on how many questions you have, and how many of these questions they need to get right in order to pass.

For our example vegetable quiz, we stated that respondents must answer both questions correctly, therefore the minimum score in this quiz is 2.

25. Daily quiz attempts:

By default this will be set to unlimited, meaning that if a respondent does not achieve the minimum score on their first try, they can try again an unlimited number of times that same day.

If required, you can limit this and choose a number of attempts in a day for the same email address between 1 – 5 by clicking the drop down and making your selection.

26. When you are happy with all of your settings, click ‘Save’

All done!

You will be redirected back to the Badge applications tab under creator tools and your new quiz will be at the top of the list.

Now the fiddly bit is over, don’t forget to share! Click here to find out ways to share your new application.
